What is a D.O.?
A Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) is an osteopathic physician. Like a Medical
Doctor (M.D.), D.O.s are licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication
in all 50 states. Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of basic medical
education, and both can choose to practice in a specialty area of medicine
-- such as cardiology, surgery or obstetrics -- after completing a residency
program.
However, it's the way D.O.s and M.D.s are different that can bring an extra
dimension to your family's healthcare. D.O.s practice a "whole person"
approach to medicine, focusing on preventive healthcare. Instead of just
treating specific symptoms of illnesses, they regard you as an integrated
whole person, recognizing emotional health, lifestyle and overall well-being
which play an important role in health.
D.O.s receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system -- your body's
interconnected system of muscles and bones that make up two-thirds of its
body mass. This training provides osteopathic physicians with a better understanding
of the ways that an injury or illness in one part of your body can affect
another.
