Did You Know?: Breast Cancer
Source: American Cancer Society, October 2002

  • If it hasn’t already, breast cancer will touch you or someone you know. The disease will strike more than 200,000 times this year and claim 40,000 lives in the US. For information about how you can fight the disease, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org.
  • Women can protect themselves against breast cancer by following three simple steps to detect it as early as possible: Have yearly mammograms starting at age 40; have clinical breast exams by a health care professional every three years beginning at age 20 and annually beginning at 40; and perform monthly breast self-exams starting at age 20. Early detection saves lives.
  • Honor those you know who have faced breast cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® walk. Money raised goes to fund important research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs in the fight to end this disease. To find an event in your area, call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
