West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can infect humans, many types of birds and some other animals. Most people who become infected with the virus will have few or only mild symptoms. However, in a small percentage of cases, West Nile Virus can lead to a serious condition called encephalitis marked by inflammation and swelling of the brain.

Infectious Disease specialists at Botsford General Hospital are recommending that people in the community learn to protect themselves from exposure to the virus and understand the signs and symptoms of the disease.

If you suspect you have been infected by West Nile Virus, contact your physician. If anyone in your family develops symptoms such as high fever, confusion, muscle weakness, a stiff neck, and sever headache, you should contact a physician.
