The Botsford General Hospital Family Practice Residency Program provides all the essentials necessary for an outstanding graduate medical education.

Botsford General hospital (Osteopathic) is a 336-bed acute care general hospital. It maintains a full complement of physicians in the specialties of anesthesia, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, hand surgery, infectious disease, internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, peripheral vascular surgery, plastic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonology, radiology, rehabilitation medicine, spine surgery and urology.

There are currently 19 approved residency training programs in place with a housestaff of approximately 160. Botsford General Hospital offers the opportunity to experience a progressive, multi-disciplined community hospital with the latest technology which is strategically positioned, both medically and educationally, with leading medical centers.

Selected outpatient placements in the community are a major component of the training program with an emphasis on "real world" office-based longitudinal care of patients and their families. Faculty are selected on their commitment to teaching and training are all board certified family practitioners.

Residency training in Family Practice reflects the concepts and philosophy of the discipline. Osteopathic family physicians express this philosophy best by assuming responsibility for continuing and comprehensive care of individuals and families, with appropriate consideration of the social, psychological, physiological, biological, economic and cultural dimensions of health. Fundamental to the philosophy of osteopathic Family Practice is a caring attitude, which facilitates the total coordination of patients' and families' health care needs.

The purpose of a Family Practice Residency Training Program is to provide the resident with a properly organized, progressive experience for primary responsibility in the care of patients in a family environment through continuity of didactic and clinical experience.

The experience is accomplished in several ways. Residents receive clinical supervision from teaching faculty in all aspects of patient management and are given maximum responsibility in accordance with their level of experience. While inpatient hospital training is essential for a well-rounded physician, the emphasis is on an outpatient, ambulatory based clinic experience. Residents spend the majority of their time in the Botsford Family Health Centers developing their own caseload and competence in continuity of care. Faculty trainers provide assistance, supervision and management of these cases with the goal of independent and autonomous functioning.

Journal Club and residency sponsored conferences are held regularly to discuss ongoing issues related Family Practice. Once a month, residents attend all day lectures at MSUCOM as part of the COGMET Family Practice training program. In addition, there are behavioral medicine and practice management conferences to teach interpersonal communication skills for doctor/patient and office staff relationships.
