Program Description: The structure and design of the residency program is to train clinical gastroenterology residents so they are capable of functioning as consultants and teachers in all aspects of gastroenterology. As of July of 1999, the residency program was extended to three years. Following the satisfactory completion of the program, the resident will be board eligible for certification in gastroenterology by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

The clinical rotations and curriculum are designed to give the gastroenterology resident a well-rounded exposure to all aspects of clinical gastroenterology. The resident will be expected to achieve competency in gastroenterologic, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. The resident will also be exposed to clinical nutrition. Part of the resident's responsibilities include giving lectures and participating as an integral part of the teaching program. A resident's responsibilities will increase commensurate to his/her cognitive skills.

The residency program is designed to train physicians to be proficient in most areas of gastroenterology and liver disease. It is expected that they will be a resource to the community hospital, as well as to the Osteopathic profession.
