OBJECTIVES AND GOALS - continued

There is a heavy emphasis on physical examination and beside cardiology quality assessment and patient care is emphasized. Trainee will also have the opportunity to understand the appropriate coding guidelines and fully understand evaluation and management guidelines and attend lectures in these areas. An evidence-based approach to cardiology is emphasized with understanding of critical pathways, guideline development, algorithm and national guidelines.

There will be specific emphasis on osteopathic structural exam and osteopathic manipulative therapy and its relationship to cardiovascular disease. Active research projects will be developed to determine how osteopathic manipulative therapy can decrease length of stay and improve the quality of health care for patients with cardiovascular disease.

The cardiology fellow has an introduction to basic cardiology during the first and second years and this will continue into the third year and the cardiology fellow will be expected to participate in the cardiology consult service and manage the clinical cardiology service under the supervision of cardiologists. The cardiology fellow will participate in weekly cardiology lectures to the house staff and participate in the Cardiology Journal Club and the Cardiology Cath Conference.

Cardiology research is not only emphasized but is required in the cardiology fellowship. To become board eligible, the cardiology fellow must produce a research project which is publishable quality. It is strongly recommended to the fellows that a Cardiology fellow participate in abstract presentation at the American College of Cardiology and/or the American Heart Association and submit a paper for publications.
